iPhone 13 Launching on September 14
Breaking down the date, the third week of September places the iPhone 13 release between 13-17th. Historically Apple announces new iPhones on Tuesdays and launches them (pre-order) on Fridays. If Wedbush is correct, this is likely to make the launch event Tuesday, September 14 with pre-orders opening on Friday, September 17.
I would love Apple to match the date and iPhone number and announce the iPhone 13 on Monday 13 September, but Apple passed up this opportunity last year announcing the iPhone 12 range on Tuesday, October 13 so I don’t see the company bending this year either.
As for the shock, in contrast to other leaks, Wedbush insists the iPhone 13 lineup will launch with a flagship 1TB iPhone 13 Pro - double the current iPhone 12 Pro top tier storage option. Moreover, these claims have added credibility after Bloomberg’s respected Apple insider Mark Gurman tipped a new ‘ProRes’ video recording option for iPhone 13 Pro models last week. ProRes is said to use far more storage than even current 4K video footage, making a 1TB iPhone 13 essential for video enthusiasts and professionals.
The biggest benefit of this for most users, however, is likely to be the trickle-down effect with the potential of a 512GB mid-tier model. Considering 128GB was only introduced as the entry-level tier last year, I can’t see that changing but 128GB / 512GB / 1TB options have massive upsell potential at each price point.
And, considering what we already know about Apple’s new iPhones, this could be a deal maker. While a 1TB storage option may steal the headlines, the iPhone 13 range will also have massive new cameras, bigger batteries, faster charging, smaller notches, next-gen WiFi, and — on Pro models — globally upgraded 5G and ProMotion displays.
And here’s the good and bad news: Apple is freezing iPhone 13 prices which could deliver another supercycle of sales, but getting your hands on one is likely to prove a lot more expensive than that.
